Onion Browser lets you surf the web privately, without revealing IP address

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 08:45 AM PDT

As I was browsing the Top Paid apps section on my iPad last night, I was surprised to come across an app called Onion Browser. Not because it’s yet another 3rd party web browser app, but the fact that it’s one of the only iOS web browsers that tunnels web traffic over the TOR network (“The Onion Network” for short). What it essentially does is let you surf the web in complete anonymity by routing your connection through multiple servers before reaching its destination. Here’s how wikipedia describes it:

ZAGGfolio Keyboard Case for new iPad in Review – To Type ‘n Protect

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 04:21 PM PDT

Sometime ago, I'd reviewed a keyboard/case combo from ZAGG – the ZAGGmate – for my iPad 1. Thanks to its slick and slim design, along with the capable bluetooth keyboard, it became a constant companion whenever I traveled with the iPad. The one downside was that the tablet's back was left exposed to potential drops and falls – a trade-off for its sexy form factor. So as an alternative, ZAGG introduced the ZAGGfolio, a folio-styled case that not only houses a much improved keyboard, but also offers front and rear protection for the iPad when closed.

Seeing how I'd become quite reliant on the ZAGGmate, I was eager to pick up a case with similar functionality for my new iPad. And now that I've had 3 weeks of hands-on time with the ZAGGfolio, I've once again found myself growing very fond of this combo case, thanks in large part to the drastically improved typing experience offered over its predecessor.

Cannon Cat in Review – In Space No One Hears Meow

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 07:19 AM PDT

Apparently the need to add "cuteness" to puzzle games isn't going away any time soon, but that's okay with me as long as the game is fun to play.  Thankfully that is the case with Cannon Cat, the premiere offering from new iOS developer Loqheart.  It would probably be more accurate to label the game action than puzzle, though there are definitely situations that will require a bit of thought if you want to score all the fish in a level.  However you want to classify the game it's enjoyable and quite habit forming.

Grab the Hunger Games Trilogy ($2.70) and other ebooks at 90% off via Kobo coupon code

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 12:35 PM PDT

If you’re a bit of a bookworm, you definitely need to take advantage of this amazing deal from Kobo Books. By using the coupon code “welcome90us” (simply switch out the ‘us’ depending on your location, like ‘ca’, ‘au’, uk’) on check out, you’ll get 90% off the website price. So the Hunger Games Trilogy for instance, selling for $26.98, will be reduced to $2.70 before taxes! The caveat is that it’ll only work once per account AND on non-agency books. While there’s no section specifically for non-agency books on the kobo website, they can typically be spotted by ebooks prices that end in something other than ‘.99′ (i.e $26.98 or $9.87) or if the ebook shows 2 prices (i.e ‘List Price’ and ‘Our ‘Price’). Other coupon codes that currently work include:

Remarks updated with realistic handwriting and automatic sync feature

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 09:02 AM PDT

Readdle’s Remarks, one of the best notetaking/annotation apps for the iPad, has been updated to v1.3 and received 2 new features:

  • New realistic handwriting with variable stroke width
  • Automatic sync with Dropbox, WebDAV, GoogleDocs

Handwriting now looks significantly better than before, and depending how quickly you write, the strokes will have ‘variable widths’. A simple upgrade to be sure but it does make your handwriting look remarkably more realistic. Since updating the app last night, I’ve found annotating freehand on PDF files even more enjoyable. The automatic sync feature is also a handy new addition, where any changes made to files within the Dropbox/Google Docs designated folder will automatically be saved and synced. Remarks 1.3 is a free update for those who already own the app, otherwise, $4.99 for new users.

10 New App Store Games To Watch [April 16 - 22]

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 07:21 AM PDT

Fancy yourself a game developer but don't have any programming skills?  Sketch Nation Studio could change your life, as it will allow you to design games right on your iOS device without even having to write a line of code.  If you'd rather just stick to playing games there's Saving Private Sheep 2.  The mechanics are way different than the original, but if the same goofy humor is there is should still be a winner.  Real time strategy fans would do well to check out Total War Battles from SEGA.  This medieval Japan conquest game has an interesting game play mechanic: you can't retreat!  You better be really sure that every move is one you want to make.

Onavo Extend adds LTE/CDMA support, will help cut down on data usage

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 09:45 AM PDT

Onavo Extend, an existing iOS app that helps you save up to 80% on your data consumption, has just added support for 4G LTE iPads, and the iPhone 4S on CDMA networks. Using cloud-based technology and some and compression magic, Onavo helps make sure that you don’t go over your monthly data plan. Basically, here’s how it works:

Onavo Extend installs a configuration profile (which includes your operator's APN settings) on your device so that data you receive from the Internet is compressed in our cloud-based compression service, located in datacenters operated by Amazon Web Services. The compressed data is then sent to your mobile device so that you get a leaner, faster and more efficient version of the web.

Digizoid zO2 Personal Subwoofer in Review – who let the dogs out?

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 02:20 AM PDT

Indeed. Digizoid dub this diminutive piece of plastic a 'personal subwoofer'. I'd dub it a personal wolf pack – that is, if wolfs were known for barking. They probably growl, so maybe the metaphor stands. Which is more than I could do the first time I heard the zO2, which floored me.

I've been mopping up ever since.

Care to discuss this in our forums? Go ahead!
