twig, a Multi-Talented Cable for the iPhone

Posted: 30 May 2012 08:51 AM PDT

Meet twig, a highly unique iPhone cable designed by 3D PRODUCT, a product development company located in Portland, Oregon. Unlike Apple’s standard USB cable, twig is only 4 inches (102mm) long and made with 3 bendable legs that give it added versatility. With an iPhone docked, the legs can be bent to create a make-shift tripod, great for snapping photos or hands-free FaceTime sessions. It can also be be used as a wall charger, made to wrap around various objects and even as an earbud cord wrap. The twig is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and Nano and comes with a variety of colours (8). This Kickstarter project needs to meet its goal of $50,000 and after 2 days, it’s already at nearly $28,000. For a pledge of $18 (the early bird special), you’ll get a black twig, while with $20 pledge, you can pick from a color of your choice.  Check out the video below of how the final design for twig came to be.

bitly introduces bitmarks, new web interface and iPhone app

Posted: 29 May 2012 12:52 PM PDT

bitly, one of the most popular link shortening services on the web (25 billion links have been saved since 2008) has not only radically redesigned its web interface, but also introduced some new features that aims at better organizing your URLs. Links are now known as “bitmarks” (think of them as bookmarks for anything interesting you come across on the web) and “bundles”, which are essentially folders which you can assign bitmarks to. They can then be made either private or public, and easily shared with friends and family. Coinciding with the changes, the bitly iPhone app was released today, making it more convenient to keep all those saved links close at hand when on-the-go. With the ability to read your bitmarks offline, bitly can now be used as a read it later tool as well, much like Pocket or Instapaper. bitly for the iPhone is a free download and available now on the App Store.

New images of (alleged) iPhone 5 with metal back, smaller dock connector and centered FaceTime camera

Posted: 29 May 2012 10:55 AM PDT

After seeing numerous mockups of what the iPhone 5 might look like, 9to5mac has today posted some high quality images of what supposedly will be the next generation iPhone. Shown in both black and white, the back panel is said to be made from metal, which is in line with a report previously posted by iLounge. Other noticeable changes include the earphone jack being moved to the bottom left corner of the device, a redesigned speaker grill, a new and much smaller dock connector, and a new opening between the camera lens and LED flash.

10 New App Store Games To Watch [May 21 - 27]

Posted: 29 May 2012 07:26 AM PDT

Every once in a while there is a week with so many solid new games released that it's hard for me to decide which ones to write about.  This was one of those weeks.  So, instead of recapping some of my entries in the intro, I'm going to mention a few that didn't quite make my list.  Tennis fans should check out Virtua Tennis Challenge, the first installment of SEGA's hit franchise to make its way onto iOS devices.  You'll compete against 50 different computer players on 18 courts across the globe, or you can challenge your friends via WiFi and Bluetooth.  Chillingo fans were treated to 3 new games this week, but the one I'm most excited about is Air Mail.  You'd never suspect that delivering packages would be so adventurous, but the brief teaser video shows you travelling to exotic locations and getting shot at repeatedly.  Gamers that love side scrollers might be interested in Dragon Evolution.  If the simple fact that you get to play a dragon isn't enough, how about 80+ missions, 36 skills and the ability to customize said dragon?

BrainJewel in Review – Are You Smarter Than A Mummy?

Posted: 29 May 2012 07:25 AM PDT

It seems like so many in the puzzle genre revolve around physics based gameplay that it's nice once in a while to load up a game like BrainJewel.  After playing this offering from TribePlay for a little bit you suddenly realize how nice it is to simply fling stuff at other stuff and get points for it.  Don't get me wrong – I'm not saying that physics games aren't fun, nor am I claiming that this isn't a good game, because neither statement would be true.  I'm just suggesting that if you're going to tackle a title like BrainJewel, you might want to have a game around that won’t require nearly as many brain cells when you need to take a break every once in a while.

Because We May: App Sales for iOS, Android and PC/Mac Platforms

Posted: 25 May 2012 10:59 AM PDT

Just in time for the long Memorial Day Weekend, a bunch of (indie) developers have banded together and created the “Because We May” initiative, slashing prices off their titles in an attempt to promote their work.

We believe that developers should have the freedom to price their games how they like, without interference from the online stores that sell the games. Why? Because it allows us to promote our games more freely, as we are doing here! We rely on the ability to promote our games for our livelihood and control over pricing is an important tool for this purpose.

New on iOS App Store: Free App of the Week and Editors’ Choice

Posted: 25 May 2012 09:50 AM PDT

Apple has quietly launched two new weekly promotions/sub-categories on the App Store: Free App of the Week and Editors’ Choice. The former – as the name implies – features an app that will go free for an entire week, and Cut the Rope: Experiments for the iPhone (as $0.99) and iPad (was $1.99) is the promo’s very first selection (Apple tweeted CtR: Experiments as their #FreeAppoftheWeek). The latter meanwhile, has replaced the weekly feature formerly known as the iPhone and iPad App of the Week. This week’s selections are Extreme Skater and Facebook Camera for the iPhone and SketchBook Ink and Air Mail for the iPad.

As for the Mac App Store, while there doesn’t appear to a Free App of the Week up for grabs, there are two current Editors’ Choice Mac apps: Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Cobook. Be sure to grab the excellent Cut the Rope: Experiments now for your iDevice(s).

Yahoo! brings Axis web browser to iPhone and iPad

Posted: 24 May 2012 07:49 AM PDT

No doubt Google is king of search engines, but Yahoo is hoping that their lastest product can help reclaim a chunk of the lucrative pie. Called the Yahoo! Axis, it offers “a faster, smarter search with instant answers and visual search previews”. Basically, it take’s Google’s Instant Preview feature to the next level with a more friendly (and attractive) user interface. It works on your web browser via a plugin and on iOS as well, thanks to the release of the Yahoo! Axis app. Aside from a highly intuitive browsing experience, its main highlight is that Axis is made to work seamlessly across various platforms. So if you bookmark a particular site on your iPad, it’ll appear on your desktop and iPhone as well. Even the most recently visited page will be waiting for you as you jump from one device to the next. The web browser is free to download and so far very well received by iOS users. Check out the demo video below and see how it all works.
