I'm always on the lookout for the perfect scrolling shooter and I'm beginning to think such a beast doesn't exist. Fortunately, while not as a whole unblemished, RayForce has many of the qualities I'd expect in my ideal candidate. On the other hand, it has a couple of big discretions that actually push it back below some of my favorite iOS jaunts. So enough with the opening paragraph rhetoric already, let's find out what this game is all about!

Defense Zone is a tower defense game for iOS. This game advantageously differs from others of the same kind by its crafted interface, finely tuned balance, sensible OpenFeint support and eye-catching graphics.

The important feature of the game is an algorithm of appearance of units and corresponding waves. Waves are automatically generated, each following the preceding complex, since everything is balanced: distance between units, their total health, which makes the game interesting to play both on easy and hard levels.

In contrast to many games Defense Zone does not allow one super-weapon, only an artful combination of all of them can play that role.

Defense Zone supports OpenFeint that simplifies posting all level results in a consolidated database for further comparing with other players whatever level they play. Points are given not only for the number of dead units, but also for remaining lives after the passage of the level, for killing stronger units and for the time spent on the whole.

There is both a free lite version and a paid full version of the game.

Chillingo was the big winner this week with two selections in my watch list. Woody Woodpecker has made his debut on the App Store, though I'm not sure if his outing will appeal more to racing fans or Tiny Wings (TMA Review) enthusiasts. On the other hand, Zombie Wonderland 2: Outta Time should undoubtedly appeal to players that like to blow zombies away. Now if decimating aliens is more your style, then Star Marine: Infinite Ammo might just fit the bill. Of course, if you'd rather take out aliens while flying a ship, you're probably more interested in Rayforce, a port of a popular mid-90's arcade game brought to us by Taito.

If you needed better encouragement to buy Snapseed than an enthusiastic TouchMyApps review, I can think of no better endorsement than Apple’s own knighting of Nik Software’s Snapseed as iPad app of the year 2011.

But if you need a second opinion – and after a long time with Snapseed, I feel that my opinion is valid – mine is simple. Buy it. That’s it. Snapseed is the perfect companion app for frequent Facebook and frantic Flickr photographers. The reason for this isn’t the very decent uploading interface, but its ergonomic input system.

Soul Calibre coming to iPhone and iPad on Jan 19th

Soul Calibre, the iconic weapon-based fighter that first released for the arcades and Sega Dreamcast in the late 90′s, will be making its way to iOS on Jan 19th. The port will feature all 19 of the original fighters, and will include arcade battle, time attack, survival, practice and museum modes. While the launch price is currently unknown, Soul Calibre will be a universal app and require an iPhone 4/4S, iPad 2 and iPod Touch 4G to run the visually impressive game. And coinciding with Namco Bandai’s iOS release, Soul Calibre 5 is set to make its Xbox 360 and PS3 debut next month, on Feb 3rd. Check out the official trailer and more screenshots after the break.

redsn0w 0.9.10b4 update includes iBooks fix

RedSn0w, the popular jailbreaking tool has been updated to version 0.9.10b4 and now includes the long awaited fix for iBooks not being able to run on jailbroken iOS 5.0.1 devices.

The b4 version of redsn0w incorporates the 5.0.1 fix for iBooks, and also for sporadic problems with launchctl. Thanks to @xvolks for merging the iBooks (sandbox) fix from @comex's github into the overall corona untether from @pod2g! As usual, you can choose to install the fix either by re-running redsn0w over your existing jailbreak (de-select Cydia if you do that), or by installing the corona package from Cydia (it's the same set of files no matter which way you choose).

If you’ve previously jailbroken your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch using redsn0w, all you need to do is re-jailbreak it using 0.9.10b4, but do remember to uncheck the “Install Cydia” option beforehand. Conversely, you can run the latest version of the Corona package (1.0.4) on Cydia in order to use iBooks once again.

Video shows off jailbroken iPhone 4S (untethered)

Just a few weeks ago, the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 was released thanks to the efforts of hacker pod2g. Sadly for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users, it only supported A4 iDevices (iPhone 4, iPad 1 etc). Well pod2g has posted another video (made by Chronic dev team member Dustin Howett) of a jailbroken iPhone 4S rebooting without having to tether to a computer. While no date has been given of its public release, pod2g did say “Only a few to wait now”. Could mean a few days or maybe even weeks, but at least we now know that the wait shouldn’t be that much longer.

Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War Of The Worlds: Minigame Adventure in Review – Isn’t That A Long Title?

The War Of The Worlds is one of those properties that in my opinion has never really been used to its full potential, except for possibly the radio broadcast that scared a nation in 1938. I must admit that I never would have dreamed of anyone turning the saga into a musical, however, let alone making a mini-game extravaganza out of said musical. Sadly, the concept is much better than the execution and little things like interface inconsistencies and constant crashing make the game not very much fun to play. Boring mini-games don't help either.

iTunes App Store gets Quick App Preview feature

Browsing for apps to add to your collection via iTunes has gotten easier thanks to the new quick app preview feature. Previously, users would have no choice but to navigate to each individual app page to find out more about the app. But with the newly implemented quick preview popup box, iOS users can now view the Description, What’s New and Screens shots without leaving the current page. Whenever you hover above any app icon throughout the App Store with a mouse/touchpad, an “i” info icon will appear on its bottom right corner. Click on that and you can easily glance at the app details, and even make the purchase right from within. Give it a try yourself. After a short while, you’ll probably be making extensive use of this neat little feature and not have to rely so much on that back button.

iPad 3 to release in March with Retina Display, Quad-core process and LTE

According to a report by Bloomberg, production for the iPad 3 has already begun and will be ready for a March launch date. The third gen iPad will also sport a quad-core chip, the long rumoured Retina Display and have support for LTE.

Apple Inc. (AAPL)'s next iPad, expected to go on sale in March, will sport a high-definition screen, run a faster processor and work with next-generation wireless networks, according to three people familiar with the product.

While the quad-core processor and retina display should not come as surprises for the iPad 3, the fact that the upcoming tablet will be compatible with the much faster LTE network before its iPhone counterpart is somewhat surprising. Bloomberg’s sources explain that the iPad “has a bigger battery and can better support the power requirements of the newer technology”. Of course, that’s not to say that the iPhone 5 won’t be compatible with LTE when it does release later this year.

Super Crate Box in Review – Just One More Time, Please…

There's no question Super Crate Box is a silly game. You basically run around one of three levels collecting crates and killing monsters to stay alive. It's like a side view FPS with no fancy graphics and no point. The funny thing is that it is also one of the most addictive games I've played in quite a while, and that says a lot since I've spent almost every day for the past week playing Treasures of Montezuma 3. There's something about the simplicity of the game combined with the retro pixel graphics that to me makes it a whole lot more interesting than the previously released Muffin Knight, a game clearly inspired by this one. All I know is I'm glad to be part of the crate collecting revolution.

Being able to send your notes to these two popular cloud-based services will make it that much more convenient for its users. Here’s What’s New in version 3.3:

• Serious Dropbox integration: Send notebooks and pages directly to your Dropbox, or enable automatic backup to be sure you always have a copy of your notes in the cloud. Open Penultimate files from your Dropbox.
• Evernote support. Evernote’s handwriting recognition is a great fit for Penultimate users. You can send notebooks and notes to your account for searching there later. Very simple signup in the app if you want to give it a spin.
• Open new workflows by “Open”ing your notebooks and pages in other apps on iPad.
• Copied images can be pasted into Penultimate, and copied ink can be pasted into other apps.
• Now available in Chinese (simplified) and Korean.
• As always, many other improvements and updates.

Developers selling iPhone apps on eBay for quick cash

Several days after developer Neal Schmidt sold his iPhone game BuckShot on eBay for $16,000, a few others are hoping to follow suit and pawn off their apps for quick cash. Simon Papineau more recently sold the rights to three of his games (Perfect Date, Tic Tac Toe Classic and XO: Tic Tac Toe 3D) on ebay for $3000. These apps have been around since 2009 and been downloaded 300,000 times – about 300 total downloads a day. The winner of the bid received the complete source code, all the related graphics and name of apps on the App Store.

For years now Telltale has proven time and time again that they’re able to turn a famous franchise into first-class episodic adventures. We've seen this in reboots of Sam & Max and Monkey Island (Review) series, as well as excellent adaptations of Wallace & Gromit and Back to the Future (Review). But when Jurassic Park: The Game was announced I couldn't help but feel skeptical as to how the unique cinematic experience of such a movie could be translated into an interactive title. Well, I can tell you right now I have been proven wrong.

A little over a year ago I started using Naturespace: Relax Meditate Escape Sleep (TMA Review) – one of the best ambient nature sounds apps out there. Unique in the way it makes a fully engrossing surround sound experience even through the stock Apple earbuds, it has saved my nerve endings from countless deaths. And as we all know – nerves don't regenerate. Well, I'm glad to say that shortly before Christmas (yes, I Know I'm a bit late on this but still) the developers informed me that they’d just rolled out a massive update, not only making an additional 15 tracks available for purchase but a few nifty features in the catalogue as well.

Things still haven't quite picked up from the holiday break yet, but I did find a few games to talk about this week. Old school RPG gamers might want to give Dungeon Of The Damned a try, a dungeon crawler that harkens back to the days of games like Dungeon Master with some adventure elements thrown in to boot. If you'd like a simple action game you would probably enjoy Super Crate Box where your sole purpose is to dodge monsters and collect crates. It sounds awfully basic but a lot of people are saying it's quite addictive. For those that wish to unleash their inner Jedi without spending lots of money on Knights Of The Old Republic online there's Brisksaber, a cheesy looking promotional piece between a beverage company and one of the kings of filmmaking to promote the upcoming release of the 3D version of a certain galaxy spanning saga.

I'm not a big fan of HdO but an occasional frantic spin on the next Sally's Spa can easily suck me in for hours. As you may have guessed, our victim today is of the latter persuasion and also a follow-up to the reasonably successful Fix-it-up: Kate’s Adventure (Full), putting you in charge of a auto-repair shop. • new freehand drawing engine (PDF Annotations) produces smoother handwriting
• swiping a PDF page to the right and to the left with three fingers can now be used as "Go Back" and "Go Forward" gestures within a single file. Now you don’t have to turn the menu on to use the “Go Back” button.
• TXT editor now starts editing close to a viewing position
• Bonjour server records can now be quickly moved to the permanent "Connect to Server" location with a special button. This will allow to use advanced connection options, like changing the default server path and default login name.

Aside from the improved drawing engine and swipe gestures to move between pages, the iPad version has also introduced PDF Page Lock, a function which prevents accident taps and unwanted page turns. The update is free for those who already own the $4.99 app, and if you’re looking for a highly reliable and capable PDF reader, GoodReader won’t disappoint.

No doubt we’ve all worried about accidentally dropping our iPads whilst using it. But rest assured, it’s a whole lot more resistant to sudden impacts – at least that’s what G-Form wants you to believe. Promoting their Extreme Edge protector for the iPad, G-Form drops the iTablet from 100,000 feet up to see if the device can survive the extreme drop. Surprisingly, the iPad’s still in pretty good shape, and more importantly, it continues to work after the free fall.

I won't say that G5 Entertainment can do no wrong, but their crop of new releases over the last couple of months hasn't let me down yet. As it turns out, The Magician’s Handbook: Cursed Valley is no exception to that rule. I have to admit that I'm just a bit disappointed that it sways towards the more traditional hidden object game format. That being said, it still keeps me going back for more, and in the end that's all that matters.(...)

Pesky Penguins is the first game from UK developer Knuckle Face. It's an arcade-style, family friendly game where players try to survive an endless assault of 'Pesky Penguins' who are trying to push them into the icy water. The aim is to stay alive for as long as possible and to collect fish to unlock new power-ups, levels and characters.
