The gTar uses the iPhone to teach you how to Jam

Posted: 22 May 2012 11:12 AM PDT

gTar - Guitar made for iPhoneIf you’ve just started out learning out to play the guitar (or it’s something you’ve always wanted to do), this Kickstarter project is definitely worth keeping an eye on. Dubbed the gTar, this Digital Guitar was designed to work in unison with your iPhone, teaching you how to play songs with a fretboard that lights up. It’s similar in concept to the Fretlight Guitar, but now with the added convenience of having the notes and songs imported over from the iPhone and gTar app. Here’s how it works:

While most guitars have pickups to amplify the sound of vibrating strings, the gTar has none – instead, we’ve designed the gTar with sensors that detect exactly what you’re playing in real-time and relay each note to your iPhone, which then produces the actual sound.

Apple said to be testing iPhone 5 with 3.95″ 640 x 1136 display

Posted: 22 May 2012 10:20 AM PDT

According to 9to5mac, Apple is currently testing two prototype iPhone 5 models and both have displays that measure 3.95″ diagonally, with a resolution of 640 x 1136 thanks to the extra 176 pixels that have been packed in. As for the width, the screen will remain 1.94″ wide, and increase in height to 3.45 inches.

Right now we know of a few next-generation iPhone candidates in testing. These prototype phones are floating around Apple HQ in thick, locked shells in order to disguise the exterior design to "undisclosed" employees. We know of two next-generation iPhones in testing with a larger display: the iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2.

Unleash your drumming skills on the iDevice with iDrum

Posted: 21 May 2012 08:47 AM PDT

iDrum kit for iPhone and iPad

While there are plenty of drumming apps for the iDevice, you’d be hard pressed to find an actual drum pad that’s designed especially for the iPhone and iPad. Not only will a physical accessory make the experience more fun (and realistic), but it’ll also save your screen from the constant whacking. Enter Dream Cheeky’s iDrum, a (rechargeable) bluetooth 7 piece drum kit that connects to your iDevice. With the free iDrum Sound System app, it’ll let you jam along with your favorite tunes and even learn how to drum with pre-programmed songs. You can also record and playback your jam sessions to see if all those hours practicing with makeshift drumsticks have finally paid off. The iDrum will ship on May 31, 2012 and can be pre-ordered now for $69.99. Check out the video of the iDrum in action after the break.

10 New App Store Games To Watch [May 14 - 20]

Posted: 21 May 2012 07:56 AM PDT

Mini Mix Mayhem

It's that time of week again, and I've got my list of games that will hopefully tickle your fancy.  NerdHerder is a free experience that lets you get exercise your geek wrangling skills.  Unity 3D graphics, an AR interface with virtual fishing pole and lots of misguided office inhabitants running around should make for an interesting time.  If you're more into quick play time and immediate feedback you'll love Mini Mix Mayhem.  This mini-game marathon lets you play 4 games at the same time in single player mode, or a whopping 20 in the same game on the iPad.  If you'd like a world building experience like Minecraft but want something a bit more, you might consider The Sandbox from BulkyPix.  This pixel art universe creator throws physics into the mix, and even gives you the chance to make your own music.

Light The Flower in Review – Let There Be Light… And Fun

Posted: 21 May 2012 07:21 AM PDT

I've always preferred games that make you think a bit to those that test your twitch reflexes, and portable touch screen devices have proven to be a perfect match for puzzle games.  I have to say that the sub-genre of light bending conundrums has been among my least favorite, however, in large part due to the fact that it usually doesn't take long before I get stuck and can't move on.  Light The Flower showed me that it has as much to do with the presentation as anything.  Sure there are times where I still get stuck, but in the end it's always worth the struggle to hear the content reactions of a satisfied flower.

Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 coming in several days, new iPad will be supported

Posted: 21 May 2012 07:11 AM PDT

Absinth Jailbreak Tool

For those of you who’re eagerly awaiting the 5.1.1 untethered Jailbreak (especially all the new iPad owners out there), Dev Team member pod2g tweeted some great news yesterday. It appears that an untethered jailbreak is on the verge of being released, likely before the week’s over.

Thanks to awesome work of @planetbeing and @pimskeks, we’re near ready for a release. Now it’s a matter of days.

From pod2g’s blog, we know that most recent iDevices will be supported, including the iPad 3 (Wifi/CDMA), though the AppleTV 3 seems to be out of luck (the iPad 3 Global model hasn’t been tested yet, but it should work). And according to iDB, the soon to be released 5.1.1 jailbreak is likely to be called Absinthe 2.0. If so, it will be the successor to the original that became the first tool to successfully jailbreak (untethered) the A5 based iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Pretty soon, the jailbreak community will finally be able to install their favorite Cydia apps on their iPad 3. Good news indeed.

Audiophile Friday #1: Cypher Labs Algorhythm SOLO vs Venturecraft Go-DAP Unit 4.0 – Digital Output

Posted: 18 May 2012 10:22 PM PDT

Last week I half-arsedly introduced two accessories made specifically for the iDevice audiophile, the Venturecraft Go-DAP Unit 4.0 and the Cypher Labs AlgoRhythm Solo. Both are able and willing to replace larger, more expensive and decidedly untransportable HiFi gear, but only one is worthy of doing so.
