Quick Tip: How to disable In-App Purchases on your iPhone

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 03:25 PM PST

Several iOS games with IAPs in Top Grossing chart

In-App Purchases (IAP) on the iDevice is nothing new, but it was given significant news coverage earlier this month when an 8 year old unknowingly spent $1,400 in real money buying Smurfberries — used to speed up the growth of the virtual crops and village — in the popular game Smurfs' Village. Aside from parents not being aware of the potential costs that can accompany such "free" farming-type games, the 15 minute login window that Apple has implemented has made inadvertent (or unauthorized) IAPs more rampant. What this means is that once the password has been entered on the device when an app is downloaded, iOS won't prompt the user for another login during this time frame, be it for downloading new Apps or IAPs.

So until Apple decides to change their policy or even enforce a login for each IAP, what can you do to prevent your children or nieces/nephews from racking up the bill? We'll show you below in a few simple steps how you can disable In-App Purchases on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

New Zealand App Developers to donate proceeds in support of Earthquake Victims

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 01:12 PM PST

As most of you are aware by now, a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake rocked Christchurch, New Zealand, 6 days ago, leaving over 150 dead and many more missing. Needless to say, the tragic loss of life and damage to buildings and infrastructure has devastated one of the largest cities in the country. So to show their support and help the victims of the quake, a bunch of app developers from New Zealand have come together and will be donating 100% of the proceeds to Red Cross (until March 5th). Some of the more notable apps include the excellent adventure title Scarlett and the Spark of Life (TMA Review), Bird Strike and Chopper 2. I highly encourage you to visit the ChristChurch AppAppeal website and consider picking up a couple of games/apps that interest you. After all, it's for a good cause.

2Screens in Review – Presentation Expert for iPad

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 08:40 AM PST

For those of us in the business world, few things will raise eyebrows in wonder and envy more than plugging an iPad into an overhead projector during a meeting to show a PowerPoint presentation or render other media displayed on the screen. "Oh, anyone can do that on a laptop," some will say. But it's just not as cool, trust me.

Several presentation apps are available on the App Store but 2Screens – Presentation Expert stands out in that it displays a broad range of file types concurrently and has a companion iPhone app called 2Screens Remote than can be used to control presentation slideshows.
