Video Screens in Times Square hacked with iPhone transmitter [Video]

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 11:12 AM PDT

Apparently, it doesn't take very much to hack into display monitors you see all around you (well, at least for this guy anyway). Using an iPhone and a custom built transmitter, he was able to feed a video taken from the device right onto the screens in Times Square.

the way it works is pretty simple: plug in my transmitter into the iphone 4 and play back any video clip. you can play it through the ipod feature or through the camera roll. the transmitter instantly sends the video signal to the video repeater and the video repeater overrides any video screen that it's being held next to. it doesn't matter what shape or size the hacked screen is because the hack video will simply keep its correct dimensions and the rest of the hacked space will stay black.

Pretty neat stuff for sure…and probably a handy gizmo for proposing to your girlfriend in the bright lights of NYC as well. Full video after the gap.

Ascendancy in Review – Ascend from the darkness, come to the light of the App Store!

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 10:35 AM PDT

Looking at the power of modern mobile devices, it's no wonder then that more and more of them are the target of developers, looking to get more life out of their classic titles. And this is even more true with the iOS family, with a single point of sales and an extremely low entry barrier – costing a measly $99 per year for a developer's license. I can't say that every such upgrade goes without a hitch, but that certainly doesn't stop people from trying. Ascendancy has been universally praised back in the mid-90s and we'll soon find out if it still has the spunk to reach out to today's iOS gamers.

10 App Store Games To Watch [March 7 - 13]

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:48 AM PDT

This week's games to watch include a 2004 game of the year, a multiplayer dual stick shooter, and of course, some zombies. First up is Painkiller Purgatory, an iOS port of a PC game that won some awards back in its day. It sounds like the iOS port has some work before it's ready to claim any mobile prizes, but that's why it's one to watch. If games like Minigore and iDracula left you feeling a bit lonely you might want to sink your teeth into Raiding Company, the first iPad dual stick shooter to support 4 players simultaneously. It may not have Lara Croft, but it sounds like some serious tomb raiding fun none the less. And, for those of you that can't get enough of the undead there's Zombie Revolution, the game where the humans have gone to far and you have to lead your zombie hordes to victory by pushing the humans away.

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 07:51 AM PDT

If you'll recall from the interview we did with iCrowdApps a few months ago, this team of iPhone devs want to pay you ($500 to be exact) for your brilliant app ideas. Since they get their fair share of submissions, only those that truly stand out warrant serious consideration. And recently, Ted Kao (who also started contributing app reviews here at TMA), wrote a blog post highlighting some ideas that could point you in the right direction – and increase your chances for the extra dough. Check it out below!
