BatterySense by Philips gives you the lowdown on your iPhone’s battery

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 12:07 PM PST

With the iPhone 4S and iOS 5′s reported battery woes, it’s no wonder then that you’ve keeping a close eye on the battery meter. The 5.0.1 update that should address these power zapping issues is still 2-3 weeks away from general release. In the meantime though, you can rely on Philips’ BatterySense iDevice app. Like many battery monitors for iOS (Battery Doctor Pro for instance), BatterySense provides users with the estimated hours remaining for talk time, internet use, audio/video playback, gameplay etc. based on the current charge of the device. What’s unique with BatterySense is its “What if?” feature. By dragging the power meter up or down, the app will give recommendations on how to achieve extended usage. So if you wish to add an extra hour to watching videos, it’ll tell you to turn down screen brightness and turn off WiFi. There’s even a “Tips for Better Battery Life” page that gives some nice advice on maximizing your i-juice.

Aside from having one of the cleanest interfaces among battery apps, BatterySense is also a free download. Every iPhone should have one of these utilities installed, and Philips’ is good place to start.

10 New App Store Games To Watch [Oct. 31 - Nov. 6]

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 09:39 AM PST

This week’s 10 New App Store Games to Watch is for those that feel the need for speed.  Invictus released Race Of Champions, a racing game that lets you drive licensed cars on real world tracks to compete in a tournament that will determine the best racer in the world.  On the other hand, if you want to feel the excitement of a New York cabbie with a bit more exotic locale you might try Cosmic Cab, the game where your fares are out of this world.  If driving vehicles isn't your thing at all there's Zombie Parkour Runner HD, a game that requires you to use your athletic skills to outrun hordes of undead that would love nothing better than to eat your brains.

The Marbians in Review – Aliens In My Marbles? Oh My…

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 08:21 AM PST

Picture it: Roswell, New Mexico, some time in the 1950's.  Aliens have crash landed and they just want to get home.  Sophia Petrillo might tell a more fanciful tale, but you get the idea (though you might not get the reference).  Anyway, The Marbians is a cute little marble puzzle game with an alien theme that’s actually both fun and challenging, especially if you want to get top scores, walk away with all the moon rocks, or both.  Besides, this has one of the best soundtracks for this type of game I've heard.

Virtual City Playground in Review – Build your city for free, no strings attached

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 07:31 AM PST

I reviewed the original Virtual City (TMA Review) last year and found it to be an entertaining casual variation on the build-your-own-city theme. Though much closer to the Transport Tycoon franchise in spirit than SimCity, the mixing of various gameplay elements and the addition of quests to guide the development made for an excellent package. Building on this quest system G5 Entertainment has done what seems to be the fashionable thing these days and has gone freemium with Virtual City Playground.
