Refurbished iPad 2s now $80 – $100 off at Apple Online Store

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 01:59 PM PST

If you’re in the market for a new(old) iPad 2, now would be a great time to pick one up. Apple today dropped their prices on refurbished current gen iPads, with the entry 16GB Wi-Fi model now selling for $419 (was $449) – a total savings of $80 compared to a brand new one. The higher capacity iPads, namely the 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi (and 3G) models are a $100 off (16% savings). In case you’re uncertain about buying a “used” iPad, just know that they’re all tested and certified by Apple, and include a 1 year warranty, a brand new battery and even outer shell. I’ve purchased refurb stuff from Apple before and haven’t been let down yet (I saved $300 off my 27″ iMac this way). Supply is limited, so it’s entirely possible that these iPads won’t last until the mad rush of the Christmas shopping season.

Schreibkraft, a multilingual text processor for your iPad

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 09:42 AM PST

Infovole has just released what appears to be the ultimate tool for users who write in multiple languages. Schreibkraft, a sister app to the recent App Store offering Textkraft, is highly unique in that it allows you to write, correct and research in 10 languages simultaneously (Dansk, Deutsch, Español, Français, Italiano, Nederlands, Português (BR + PT), Русский, Svenska and English (AUS, CAN, GB + US)). A center panel provides buttons and function keys that make it easy to access diacritical marks and navigate around your document. You can also quickly look up search terms on wikipedia, and even save your docs to Dropbox! While I’ve yet to load Schreibkraft onto my iPad, I have been toying around with the very similar Textkraft app (supports only 1 language, but does have built-in thesaurus) and I’m definitely liking it so far.

Schreibkraft is currently on sale now for the introductory price of $2.99. We’ll be reviewing Textkraft in the coming days, but in the meantime take a look at the teaser video and full app description for Schreibkraft after the gap.

Schreibkraft - text editor. Write, correct, research and share your ideas, multilingual, all-in-one App. Infovole, Schreibkraft, – $2.99

Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5 just around the corner?

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 08:27 AM PST

It would appear that the long awaited Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5 is one step closer to fruition. Chronic dev team member pod2g has posted on YouTube a video of a jailbroken iPod reboot without having to tether to a computer. The only jailbreak currently available is a Tethered one, meaning every time you need to reboot, you’ll have to plug in your iDevice and reboot via one of the JB tools. A pain in the neck if you’re away from your desktop/laptop. According to pod2g, this jailbreak will also work on iOS 5.0.1:

Tons of questions from my nice followers. Too early to answer. Will work on iOS 5.0.1, will try iPad 2 and 4S after others are ready.

No word on when this untethered Jailbreak will be released for the public, though it’s probably safe to assume that it won’t be too long now before jailbreakers can finally go untethered for iOS 5.

Apps Gone Free Roundup: Mirror’s Edge, HYBRID: Eternal Whisper and more

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 07:35 AM PST

Our Apps Gone Free Roundup today features a number of great games for your iOS device – just in time for the weekend. EA’s Daily Deals has the amazing Mirror’s Edge (Review) free for a limited; it’s a mobile port of the popular console game that takes the “running” genre to a whole new level on the iPhone and iPad. Also free are Gamevil’s HYBRID: Eternal Whisper (Review) and Warfare Incorporated (Review), a game some still consider as the best RTS on the App Store. Lots of goodies this time around, so be sure to check out the full list of freebies after the gap. And remember, the price drops for most of them are only good for a very limited time.
