10 New App Store Games To Watch [April 9 - 15]

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 02:29 PM PDT

This week saw the release of a couple of iOS episodes of popular console games, but more exciting to me was the number of potentially high quality free(mium) games that were made available.  Last Day Of Work released the latest installment of their Virtual Villagers series entitled Virtual Villagers: Origins.  The claim is that this takes the series back to its roots and is based of the formula that made the original Virtual Villagers a success.  If you're interested in flying the friendly skies but don't want another Flight Control clone you might consider Aero Vacation from Chillingo.  This time management game tasks you with building the ultimate airborne vacation spot with everything from a roller coaster to a full blown golf course.  On the other hand, those looking for something completely different should take a look at O2Jam Hero.  This RPG / rhythm hybrid pits a girls' rock band against the ultimate evil, and I'm thinking you should get bonus points if you can interpret the game's iTunes description.

Cards app updated with Mother’s Day themed cards

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 11:04 AM PDT

Apple has updated its Cards app to v1.1 and added card designs for Mother’s Day, which lands on the second Sunday of May in the US and Canada (among other countries). Here’s the list of what’s new:

• Beautiful letterpress cards for Mother’s Day
• New Get Well card designs
• Additional cards for birthdays, thank you and more
• Improves accuracy of envelope address verification
• Simplifies and improves the checkout process

First released back in October of 2011, Cards lets you design and mail real greeting cards to your family and friends for a small cost – $2.99 (including postage) within the US and $4.99 for rest of the world. The one downside to the Cards app is that it currently isn’t optimized for the iPad. But other than that, it’s free to download and a great tool to use if you plan on sending some custom made cards to your loved ones.

Read It Later now becomes “Pocket”, free across all mobile devices

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 08:40 AM PDT

Read It Later, a popular read it later service with over 4.5 million users, has rebranded itself as “Pocket” and is now free across all major platforms (iOS, Android, Kindle, Web). Much like Instapaper and Readability, it lets you save web content for reading at a later time, with a user friendly format and offline viewing as well. Unique to Pocket however, is a video/image filter that allows users to easily find Youtube or Vimeo links that have previously been saved (or any article with a video embedded). The universal app also supports bulk editing, favoriting and tagging and is integrated into over 300 apps, including Zite and Flipboard. From my brief use so far, I’ve been impressed with its UI, ability to tag, and more importantly, I love the fact that I can now save videos I come across and watch them whenever via a neatly compiled list. Definitely worth checking out if you like saving articles/webpages to read later on your iPhone/iPad. Check out the promo video and full press release after the break.

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 05:19 PM PDT

Utah based Braven have announced today their Six Series speakers that will not only pump up the jam on your iOS devices, but also charge them as if it were an external battery pack. The dual functioning speakers “have two custom extended-range drivers and 3 watt speaker output providing high-fidelity stereo audio with left- and right-channel passive sub woofers”, meaning they’ll sound worlds better the tiny speakers found on your iPhone or iPad. The BRAVEN 600 (US$149.99) is made from aircraft-grade aluminum, comes in Ash Grey and Moab Red and lasts up to 14 hours on a single charge. The 625S ($179) has a rugged, shock-absorbing exterior, comes with a waterproof carrying bag and USB LED flashlight and is good for 16 hours of 16 hours of playback. Finally, the Braven 650 ($189) is equipped with aptX and AAC audio encoding for a “near lossless listening experience” and will provide up to 20 hours of continuous play.

The Braven Six Series is now available for pre-order online and will begin shipping by the end of June. Intro video and full press release after the break.
