iPhone 5 pre-orders to begin at 12AM PST, 3AM EST on Friday

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 04:53 PM PDT

If you’re one of the countless wondering just what time pre-orders for the iPhone begin this Friday, September 14th, it appears that the start time will be 12:01AM PST (3AM EST) – this according to a press release from Sprint. Both AT&T and Verizon have not yet to disclose when they’ll be taking pre-orders on their websites. It’s probably safe to say that Apple too will be commencing pre-orders online at the midnight mark.

Buying the iPhone 5 on a contract will cost $199 for the 16GB. $299 for a 32GB, and $399 for the 64GB model. Meanwhile, the off contract price for the iPhone 5 starts at $649 for the 16GB. For those who’d rather skip the pre-orders online and experience first hand the joys of camping outside an Apple Store the night before (or nights), the official launch begins at Apple Retail Stores at 8:00 a.m. on September 21.

As expected, Apple today unveiled along side the iPhone 5 an all new iPod Touch and iPod nano. The 2012 iPod Touch features a 4-inch Retina Screen, an A5 processor that’s found on the iPhone 4S (Apple says that this chip will provide up to 7x the performance of previous touches), an improved camera that’ll support FaceTime HD (the 5MP iSight camera will shoot 1080p videos), and is only 6.1mm thick and weights 88g, making it the thinnest and lightest Touch ever.

The new iPod Touch will come in 5 different colors and 2 models will be available in October: 32GB for $299 and the 64 GB capacity for $399. Like the iPhone 5, pre-orders can be made starting September 14th.

All New Apple EarPods now available for $29

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 12:46 PM PDT

First leaked a little over a week ago, Apple introduced a set of all new earphones that will replace the iconic white earbuds that ship with all iDevices. Called the “EarPods”, they took 3 years in the making and not only wears more comfortably, but they’re supposed to sound significantly better.

Unlike traditional, circular earbuds, the design of the new Apple EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other earbud-style headphone.

The speakers inside Apple EarPods have been engineered to minimize sound loss and maximize sound output. So you get high-quality audio that's just as impressive as what you'd hear from more expensive headphones.

The EarPods are now available for purchase online for $29 and they’ll also come shipped with the iPhone 5, new iPod Touch and Nano. Check out Apple’s intro video below.

iPhone 5′s camera: 8 MP, 25% thinner than 4S’, and improved low light shooting

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 11:38 AM PDT

Like the new A6 processor, the iPhone 5′s camera isn’t a monumental leap over its predecessor. In fact, it’s the same 8MP, f/2.4 aperture and 5-element lens found on that of the iPhone 4S, but it’s 25% thinner to compliment the phone’s slimmer profile. Improvements come in the form of a dynamic low light mode, which gives up to 2 f-stops greater low-light performance. A new sapphire lens crystal cover is now used, and it’s more durable and clear. The A6 chip also lends a helping hand, as it further reduces noise and includes a “smart filter” for improved color matching. Oh yes, you can expect 40% faster image and video captures, and even take stills while video recording.

And for those who want to get fancy with their photography, the iPhone 5 camera features a new panorama mode. By stitching together a string of snapshots, the camera will create one large panoramic image (28 megapixel!). As for videos, the rear camera will still shoot in 1080p, but it’ll feature better video stabilization and facial recognition. Meanwhile, the front-facing camera is now 720p (backside illuminated), thus giving you better Facetime resolution. Speaking of video chat, you can finally FaceTime your other half over cellular networks.

Utilizing the all new A6 chip, it’s even smaller and faster. 2x faster then the iPhone 4S’s A5X chip for CPU and graphics. Apple claims that the iPhone 5 will launch the Pages app 2.1x faster and load the music app with songs 1.9x snappier.

Hard Candy announces iPhone 5 case: ShockDrop

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 07:49 AM PDT

Leave it to Hard Candy to be one of the first accessory manufacturers to provide protection for the yet-to-be-announced iPhone 5. Last year, they gambled (and lost) by mass producing cases for the iPhone 4S based on leaked designs from manufacturers in China. Sadly, the rumoured teardrop design never materialized as the 4S kept the iPhone 4′s design. This time, they’re once again betting that factory leaks will turn out to be the real deal.

“We made a bet the last time the iPhone 5 rumors were circulating (October, 2011) and we lost. This isn’t a failure, but simply part of this crazy Apple accessory business,” said Hard Candy CEO Tim Hickman. “This time we’re doubling the investment and have product ready to go. Cases are sitting in Hong Kong until we verify the fit.”

Apple confirms ‘iPhone 5′ name via search results

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 07:16 AM PDT

With just 3 hours to go for the highly anticipated media event at 10am PST, there’s still speculation in some circles as to what Apple will be calling their new phone. The New iPhone?  Or simply the iPhone 5 as many would expect? Well it would appear that it will indeed be the latter, this according to Apple’s own search engine. With a search of ‘iPhone 5′ on Apple.com, one of the results returned is:

10 New App Store Games To Watch [September 3 - 9]

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 05:40 AM PDT

Not willing to rest on the laurels of having one of the biggest hits of the year in the theater, Marvel is taking the iOS world by storm as well.  This week saw two releases from the master storytellers, the first of which looks to be an Infinity Blade style game called Avengers Initiative.  The initial release lets you stomp around as the Hulk smashing things, but future episodes (read IAP) will give you the chance to test your mettle as other heroes from the legendary super-team.  If you want something a little more casual but still within the realm of super-heroism then HeroClix TabApp might work better for you.  This free iPad app interacts with specially made HeroClix characters to provide you with comic book story driven mini-games custom to each figure you own.  On the flip side, those seeking a bit of medieval butchery with a dash of otherworldly demons thrown in should check out Wild Blood from Gameloft.  This remix of the Arthurian legends pits you as Sir Lancelot against a warped Arthur and his nasty sister Morgan Le Fey… and a bunch of overzealous hellspawn as well.
