Rovio releases Angry Birds Space teaser, launch date set for March 22nd

Posted: 18 Feb 2012 12:02 PM PST

Houston, we have liftoff. Angry Birds, the uber-lucrative gaming property for Rovio (it’s been downloaded over 700 million times across various mobile platforms), will soon be embarking on a journey that’ll take the beloved cast into outer space. From Rovio’s blog:

Angry Birds Space is a completely new game with innovative new gameplay, but with some of the familiar Angry Birds elements that fans already know and love — plus some surprises!

According to Yahoo! Games, Rovio has teamed up with NASA and National Geographic to be their ‘launch partners’ when the game officially releases on March 22nd. With the fourth major installment in the franchise (the last being Angry Birds Rio), Space will let fans sling birds on completely new planets, where there’ll be new gameplay elements like zero gravity, slow-motion trajections, and “lightspeed” destruction. And as part of a coordinated launch effort, Rovio will be simultaneously releasing the mobile game along with other Angry Birds Space offerings in animation, retail and publishing. More details on the game will be unveiled in early March, but in the meantime, you can check out the teaser website and watch the brief trailer below.

Origin8's Sentinel 3: Homeworld

This President’s Day Weekend edition of our Apps Gone Free roundup coincides with the third anniversary of the Sentinel: Mars Defense release, a popular tower defense game from the folks at Origin8. Together with Sentinel 2: Earth Defense (TMA Review) and Sentinel 3: Homeworld (TMA Review), the series has managed to rack up more than 3 million downloads on the App Store. To celebrate, the TD triology is now a free download for the entire weekend. Another noteworthy app that’s gone from paid–>free is G5 Entertainment’s Treasure Seekers: Visions of Gold for both the iPhone and iPad, a solid puzzle-oriented title with mini-games and hidden object gameplay mixed in. Check out the entire list of freebies after the break.

Note: If you missed our previous Apps Gone Free post, a good number from that roundup are currently still free on the App Store.
