Smule releases Magic Guitar for iPhone

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 12:04 PM PST

Smule has released yet another unique music app for the iPhone – this time, the Magic Guitar. Following in the footsteps of other Smule apps like Ocarina and Magic Piano, Magic Guitar gives you the chance to rock out on your iPhone even if you’ve never played the guitar before.

Get ready to rock! Unleash your inner rocker with Magic Guitar, and you'll be shredding like a legend in no time. Simply hold your phone like a guitar neck, and beams of light help you play the greatest guitar songs your own way. You control the notes, speed, guitar type, pitch and vibrato. Play it once, play it a hundred times, each time is a unique experience that won't get old.

Magic Guitar’s songbook offers tunes from various artists, including The Rolling Stones, Bruno Mars, Incubus, Santana, Coldplay and much more. The app’s free to download and comes with a number of songs to get you started, while more from your favorite artists can be unlocked via IAP. And you can earn new songs by simply playing Magic Guitar and unlocking various achievements. Take a look at the promo videos after the break (including one by Smule co-founder showing off the app).

Replace your drummer with Beats+ for iPhone

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 11:00 AM PST

Ninebuzz, developers of some fine guitar apps for the iPhone (i.e Guitar Jam Tracks – Scale Trainer) has just released Beats+, a multi-genre drum loops app for all (aspiring) musicians.

BEATS+ is a simple and fun collection of drum loops for stress-free jamming and songwriting accompaniment. No assembly required! Ranging from 1 to 4 bars in length, these loops are great for casual practice or exploring song ideas. Plug into Hi-Fi speakers for the best sound (or just play right from your iPhone!).

The app comes with over 50 drum beats created by a professional drummer, including loops in the Pop-rock, blues, jazz, and R&B categories. A one-touch tempo control also lets you easily adjust the tempo from 60 – 190 BPM. A simple enough app for sure, but having these beats accompany your jam session is pretty awesome – especially for only a buck. If only apps like this existed a few years back, I may have saved myself $200 with the M-Audio Blackbox. Take a look at the cool demo video of Beats+ after the break.

Dungeon Hunter 3 set to release on Dec 21st (for free)

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 09:35 AM PST

Gameloft has just posted the trailer for the upcoming Dungeon Hunter 3, which will be released on Dec 21st. The Dungeon Hunter series on iOS has been among the most popular dual stick action games on the App Store, and they’re certainly one of my favorites in the genre. TMA reviewed both games previously (DH 1 and DH 2) and seeing how they received Kiss and Grab it ratings, the bar’s been set quite high for the third installment. One more thing to note is that Dungeon Hunter 3 will be free to download, so it appears that Gameloft has taken the freemium route with this one as well, much like the recently released Six-Guns.

The freebies just keep on coming. Telltale Games’ Monkey Island Tales 1 - the fifth game in the popular Monkey Island series – is now free for a limited time (coinciding with today’s release of episode 2 for the iPhone). Like most Telltale games on the App Store, M.I.T is an episodic adventure that puts you in the shoes of your favorite pirate, Guybrush Threepwood, once again. If you haven’t tried this point and click adventure yet, now’s your chance to grab the opening chapter on the house. Lots more freebies just after the break!

Also, our Apps Gone Free roundup from yesterday still has many apps showing free on iTunes.

Grand Theft Auto 3 for iPhone and iPad now available on App Store

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 07:36 AM PST

Announced over a week ago, the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 3 from Rockstar Games has finally landed on the App Store.

Welcome to Liberty City. Where it all began.

Rockstar Games celebrates the 10th anniversary of one of the most influential games of all time. The critically acclaimed blockbuster Grand Theft Auto III comes to mobile devices, bringing to life the dark and seedy underworld of Liberty City. With a massive and diverse open world, a wild cast of characters from every walk of life and the freedom to explore at will, Grand Theft Auto III puts the dark, intriguing and ruthless world of crime at your fingertips.

GTA III was one of my favorite games on the PS2, and with updated graphics and optimized touch screen controls, there’s no reason not to pick this classic up. I was able to squeeze in an hour of play this morning, and so far it’s been an absolute blast. The good ol’ Liberty City memories are all flooding back. The game is universal and supports the most recent iDevices: iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 4, iPad 1 and iPad 2. Check out the video trailer and gameplay demo after the gap.
